Permits granted for £150m Llanberis hydro power project
CarbonPlan’s spin off company Quarry Battery Company (QBC) special purpose vehicle Snowdonia Pumped Hydro, who are hoping to build a £150m hydro power plant in a disused Gwynedd quarry, have been granted environmental permits to drain the water in the existing reservoirs.
Plans for the 99.9MWe hydro plant are being considered by the UK Planning Inspectorate, with a decision expected by early March.
According to QBC, “Britain’s energy needs have evolved since the scheme was designed. The government has included [pumped-storage] within its 2014 Electricity Market Reform Act with the aim of helping to ensure that Britain does not suffer blackouts.”
Natural Resources Wales said it was satisfied that the company will “operate safely without harming the environment or local communities.”
