Projects

An overview of current and successfully handled projects

World Wildlife Fund - League Table of UK Cities

WWF

CarbonPlan was commissioned by the WWF in July 2007 to create a league table of the ecological footprints of 60 UK cities and then develop a report for the media. The table was compiled through analysis of existing footprint data from the Stockholm Environmental Institute. This data was then correlated with national statistics on demographics, house prices and unemployment rates to create a number of ‘factoids’ and case studies for public consumption.

The aim of the report is to engage the press and the general populous and direct them to the WWF ecological footprint calculator. This report will be published in late October by the WWF.

The Deep - Hull

THE DEEP

CarbonPlan were contracted to analyse the energy use of the UK’s largest underwater aquarium and to put forward proposals for energy reduction measures and renewable energy solutions. This report was compiled using 3 years worth of energy data and completed in August 2007.

The Deep are already implementing 2 of the recommendations from the study which would achieve a 25% reduction in their electricity use per year and have a pay back of less than 2 years. Other solutions are being developed in the medium term including the installation of a 100 kW ground source heating and cooling unit which will further reduce the overall energy costs by approximately 20%.

Traquair House Estate - Peebles, Scotland

TRAQUAIR

CarbonPlan has been engaged to do a detailed energy assessment and renewable energy feasibility study on the oldest inhabited house in Scotland. the initial report highlighted significant (circa 50 kW) micro hydro potential on the estate as well as the potential for implementing a site wide biomass heating system. The initial assessment shows that the estate could become entirely self sufficient in its energy needs with only a modest investment.

CarbonPlan is working with the estate to secure funding for these proposals.

National Wildlife Conservation Park (NWCP)

NATIONAL WILDLIFE

CarbonPlan developed a 14 volume set of Sustainable Development Guidelines. This provided background information and suggested actions for the building and operation of this potentially world leading conservation park. These documents were issued to all architects and engineers tendering for the Ł55 million development project.

Bristol Zoo Gardens

BRISTOL

CarbonPlan have been contracted to create a standardised methodology (SALOME)for measuring and reporting the environmental impact of Zoological gardens. In addition to measuring the actual impact of the BZG, CarbonPlan presented the methodology at the annual BIAZA (British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquaria) Conference in 2007 and published a joint paper.

Having identified several key areas where BZG’s impacts are the greatest we are now working to develop strategies to reduce their ecological footprint and their overheads.

Nude Skincare - Ecological Footprint Measurement

NUDE

CarbonPlan have been contracted to measure the ecological impact of Nude Skin, a fair trade, socially responsible, organic cosmetics company based in London.

Sturgis Associates

STURGIS

CarbonPlan Limited has just been engaged to provide sustainable consultancy services for Sturgis Associates projects at various stages of design. Working with the existing Green Team we will use the project work as a basis for developing an in house sustainable design guide. the project work will the be transposed into a set of four RIBA approved CPD sessions which will be presented back to the 50+ strong practise as a whole.
